A horse’s needs are pretty simple. They want to be comfortable and feel safe. The horse views the human as a bit of a threat, and they understand that we’re a different species. By nature, they’re afraid of us, and I’m trying to get them to let go of their defense. Horses are keen on the ability to notice and react to things, but they’re not intelligent the way we’d measure intelligence as humans. I’ve never found it that productive to spend a lot of time trying to determine a horse’s intelligence any more than I would a student’s. I just take every person at face value. There’s sensitivity to the horse and awareness of the horse. As humans, we have left a lot of our primitive instincts behind. A horse has to be keen in order to save his life and to be suspicious of something that might threaten him. A human might be a little dull to those senses. - Buck Brannaman
