A humorous read about an important topic. I had a vasectomy at the age of 32, even though I have no kids, because somehow I just knew I had some important work to do. I didnt know what it was then, but I do now. And I knew that I could either do the important work ahead of me and do a good job of it, *OR* put all my time and attention into being a good parent. I knew I couldnt do both well. I made my choice, and do not regret it. I have had the privilege and honour of being a pseudo step parent to a boy who is now a young man, and I am glad I did. We had some good times and some bad times, and we are still good mates. (Eh, Ethan Shaza Hight?) But I also know how bad the world is, and I know its going to get a lot, LOT worse before it gets better. Why WOULD you want to bring a child into the current shit-storm? Seriously. 16,000 children die every day from hunger and malnutrition. 4 species are going extinct every hour. I could go on and on and on and on and on and on. Things are REALLY bad out there folks. Really, really bad. Its a f*cking mess. Yet most people act as though the whole world is Disneyland and everythings coming up roses. The only conclusion I can come to is that people keep having babies because they just honestly and sincerely do not understand how bad things are. And thats the medias fault. They dont tell us the truth. They cant. Because they are not a charity or a State institution, performing a public service. They are businesses. And businesses HAVE TO make a profit, or they cease to exist. Therefore, if the media told us the truth, everyone would stop watching/listening/reading and switch to some banal, happy drivel which makes us feel good. By and large, most people actually *prefer* to keep their heads in the sand, and think happy thoughts. And media know that. Rupert Murdoch ruined the media for good, with his profit at any cost, and journalistic integrity be damned approach. And so on and on and on it goes. Some say, But I will raise my child to be one of the good ones, who will save the world (or words to that effect). Ok. Great. Good theory. I honestly wish you luck with that. No sarcasm whatsoever. We seriously need good parents raising awesome kids. Except how about this idea instead? How about you adopt a child who needs a home instead of bringing a new hungry mouth into the world? That would solve two problems in one go. Or does your ego somehow demand that you create some kind of carbon copy of yourself, because, you know, youre just that awesome? I wonder how many people will hate me for saying these things now? You know what? I dont care. As Gandhi said, Even if you are a minority of one, the truth is still the truth. There are too many humans on this planet. WAYYYY too effing many. WAYYYY too many. No matter how sustainably we live we will still be better off with less of us, not more. That is the plain and simple truth. We need to stop having babies. And it needs to be talked about....
