A in-depth look at the Norwegian gender equality paradox. In 2008, Norway was ranked #1 in equality, but in the most equal society in the world, the workplace was falling more and more towards traditional roles. What one study found was as societies became more egalitarian, interest in certain fields tended towards a stronger male / female divide (their explanation was that in a free society men and women could be freed up to choose what they actually want) and in less egalitarian societies, interest was the same among men and women, probably leaning towards the highest paying job (for a better life). Despite their national equality commissions efforts to increase gender equality in the workplace, they still found that 90% of nurses were female and 90% of engineers were male, just to name a couple fields that are traditionally female / male. This isnt to say that men and women cant excel at those fields or any fields, but that part of the reason for the nurse / engineer disparity is biological and innate, instead of completely driven by societal / cultural bias.
