A large filament erupted yesterday but only partially. See the attached video from SDO. The eruption produced a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) which is heading mostly southward but a very faint halo outline can be found in the LASCO imagery indicating there is a slight Earth-directed component. The ACE EPAM low energy protons and electrons also responded which is another indication that the CME has an earth-directed component. The CME launched with a speed of 400km/sec (CACTus estimate) which is slow, the ambient solar wind speed lies currently at 340km/s . The CME will likely blend in with the background solar wind and at arrival we will probably see a slight increase in the IMF Bt and the solar wind density. The shock will not be strong and no geomagnetic storming is to be expected from this but we nonetheless advice high latitude sky watchers to be alert the coming days for increased geomagnetic activity. The CME could pass Earth on June 8, based on the CACTus estimate. Follow it live on spaceweatherlive #sun #eruption #filament #spaceweather #CME
