As she tries to unravel the disappearance of Wendy Stanton, Callie gets to know the Dixons better than she ever wanted. EXCERPT: The light was not good in the tower as the shutters had been closed over one of the windows and the window that was not shuttered was apparently shaded by trees, letting in very little sunlight. Consequently, Wendy could not quite make out what she was seeing as she came into the room. She stopped and stood staring for several minutes then walked up closer to where the first item was hanging. Oh, she thought, it was some kind of animal pelt spread out and pegged to the wall. She was within inches of it and reached out and touched it before she realized it was not an animal. It was human skin! It had been hung upside down, the legs and feet had been spread apart and were up near the low ceiling. As Wendy gasped and quickly moved back, she brushed against the head so that she was momentarily staring into the grimly contorted face with its dead, dull, bulging eyes. The mouth was open at an odd angle, and the tongue, blackened by death, lolled out. An expression, either of horror, agony or perhaps both, was on the features. Unable to stop Wendy continued to stare at it. It was a woman, who had been perhaps in her late 40s or early 50s, it was difficult to determine under the circumstances. The clothing had been entirely removed as had the flesh and bones so that the skin could be stretched tautly. The only bone remaining was the skull along with some kind of material placed beneath the facial skin in order to support the features. Wendy now realized the other five hangings on the wall were similar to this one. They were all human beings who had once been alive and breathing, now reduced to this! She did not examine any of the others closely as to possible gender, race or age; although she could not help but note that a couple of them appeared to be small enough to be very young children. She whirled around, half expecting to see the monster who had done this lurking on the stairway behind her, ax in hand, but no one was there. Sweet Mother of God! She was hyperventilating as she ran down the stairs. Fear gripped her as she had never before experienced it and she could feel perspiration running down her sides and the pounding of her heart gone wild. She ran terrified through the living room and kitchen, across the planks of the porch, past the old washing machine - almost colliding with it - before pushing open the screen door. She didnt pause as her feet hit the dirt driveway but ran with her panting gasps echoing in her ears. Her heavy breathing and her feet thumping on the hard ground were the only sounds she heard as she headed back to the ruined road. Her one goal was to reach her car and drive away as quickly as she possibly could. She reached the rutted road and headed down the hill that led up to the house as fast as she could manage on the uneven surface. As she rounded the first bend, however, she was brought to a sudden halt by the sight of an old woman standing in the middle of the road. And just where might you be off to so fast and sudden, dearie? The old woman cackled. Through looking at my house already are you? Wendy tried to gather her wits. She surely was not going to allow some old woman to scare her and she sure as heck wasnt going to let this woman keep her from leaving, she told herself. Over to the right, behind the old woman, she saw a dark shape moving in the woods. The old woman observed where Wendys eyes shifted. Thatll be T.J. She told her. He wont hurt ya none, less I give him the sign.
