A letter from Craig Kelly on why he will not sign on for a reduction of the RET to the Aluminium smelters. He wants it abolished for all manufacturers. CRAIG KELLY I DIDNT SIGN - heres why. Today media are running a story about a letter signed by 25 Coalition MPs calling for the aluminium industry to be exempt from the the dreaded RET. I didnt sign, heres why ........... Absolutely the RET will do damage to Australias aluminum industry. But the RET does damage to EVERY Australian business that uses electricity - and it harms families whom face a higher cost of living. The RET does real harm because it mandates the use of an inefficient and costly method of production. Its like a freight delivery company being forced to make 20% of their deliveries by horse & cart rather than by truck - such a mandate increases the overall cost of doing business, makes the business inefficient and puts it at a competitive disadvantage. Likewise forcing Australia to make 20% of its electricity from inefficient and costly Chinese and Korean wind turbines, increases the overall cost of producing electricity in Australia, and places Australia at a competitive disadvantage - making us all poorer. But Exempting the aluminium industry only means other industries will pay more. Exempting just the aluminium industry is a cop out. We should not just be exempting the aluminum industry, we should be exempting all Australian industry - and all Australian families. And for those that believe that we must have the RET to take action on climate change - please feel free to advise how much the RET will reduce temperatures by ? To the nearest tenth deciminal point will suffice.
