A letter from a CST: Hello, My name is John Duncan. I have worked in fast food, retail, and factories. I went back to school at Miller-Motte Technical College from November 2009-December 2011. I am a Certified Surgical Technologist. I always say Certified because I have earned it. There are people that work in the medical field that say, Who cares if you are certified? Ive been doing this for 20 years. I dont need to be certified. Well... I have been doing this for 3 years and I can tell you that anyone that I have worked for has asked me if I am certified. I have also had patients ask me the same, and I tell them proudly that I am certified. I have always told people that I would want to progress to either a traveling tech or a First Assist. Today, I got the opportunity to be a traveling Certified Surgical Technologist. What do you think they asked me on the phone? Yes, I am certified. Reciprocity? My certification is national so I dont have to worry about that. Being certified is like having the golden ticket into the chocolate factory. Sure there are others standing outside wishing they could get in, but the factory only wants those that hold that special piece of paper, or in this case, a plastic card. I want to tell everyone that wants more out of life that you can have what you want. Dont let anyone tell you that you cant. The fact that you even enrolled in school is a great start. After I graduated, I got a job immediately, worked there for two and a half years, went to a hospital that was in Forbes 100 best places to work, and now Im on to work doing what I love as a traveling tech making more that I ever have and getting to explore America. Sincerely, John Duncan, CST
