A list of visitors to the National Police Gazette office in Manhattan during December 1885. For those not familiar with this period, the following were the wrestlers: Edwin Bibby, Mr. [Albert] Ellis, Martin Julian [Manager/Promoter], Mike Mooney, Captain J.C. Daly, John Connor, John McMahon, Matsada Sorakichi [Sorakichi Matsuda]. And then there are these three names who were all active in wrestling at one point or another, but are better known for boxing ventures. Martin Julian More so associated with managing boxers (Bob Fitzgerald springs to mind) and being behind some of the biggest boxing bouts of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He did indeed also cross into wrestling though. Most notably his association with Ernest Roeber, at one time the American Graeco-Roman Championship (although has a claim to the title being a world championship). Jack Nonpareil Dempsey Born John Kelly was a very well known boxer. He did wrestle a few matches though and even took part in what could be classed as early MMA matches, as he was involved in a couple of Boxer Vs. Wrestler matches. Mr. [Joseph] Coburn A great career in boxing and showed promising signs in Collar & Elbow wrestling later in his life {its possible were just yet to uncover enough about his early days in the 1850s & 1860s. His career seemed to be over when he was convicted of attempting to murder a policeman. However, on release he took the boxing back up and battled his old rival, Jem Mace, again. Other than the odd fight, his active days were behind him though. He did referee the occasional wrestling match though during this portion of his life. Hed been out of prison a bit over a year and a half when this article was released. January 6, 1886 - The National Police Gazette. The clipping is from Fulton History.
