A list publicized today by Apple reveals which of their suppliers may use conflict minerals - particularly from Democratic Republic of Congo - to manufacture their electronics. The list reveals 59 smelters are compliant with international ethical guidelines; 23 smelters have agreed to be audited; and the status of an additional 104 smelters remains unknown. Apple released the list in an effort to increase transparency and comply with the Dodd–Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act. Most electronic products contain minerals that are mined in conflict areas. Armed groups often control the mines and benefit financially from their yield - fueling further conflict.
