A little Facebook worthy story. At lunchtime today I came home and took my beef sandwich and cup of proper tea into the living room to relax for a few minutes. We have a wood stove that sits on the brick hearth in front of the sealed up fireplace. I noticed immediately a strange fluttery, knocking sound emanating from the stove that has not been lit for many weeks. I peered into the gloom of the dormant furnace only to see a red headed finch desperately trying to break out of its peculiar prison. How the poor frightened little creature got in there I could not imagine but there it was. We put the dogs (who have a sorry history of birdiecide) in the garage. I opened the front door, then the stove door and the panicked little tyke flew out straight into the glass of the window. With a resounding bonk it slid down the glass onto the windowsill. Gently, I cupped my hand around its fragile breast and carried it outside and rested it on the bonnet of my truck. A few seconds later with an encouraging chirp it took to flight and freedom. I found myself strangely encouraged, having seen a first hand that even if one gets into a seemingly impossible situation, rescue comes from the unlikeliest places.
