A little about our family: I have 2 daughters on the opposite side - TopicsExpress

A little about our family: I have 2 daughters on the opposite side of the spectrum. Emily is 14 and has high functioning aspergers (which manifests in girls very differently than boys... and is under diagnosed and misdiagnosed in the teen years as anxiety and/or depression). Sahara is 9 and has classic infantile autism. We noticed things with Sahara at 5 months... and it took us 4 years to get the diagnosis. At that time she was catatonic 90% of the time, non-verbal, and hit every marker on the autism inventory. We were told that she would never talk, never have meaningful relationships, never be able to live independently or have gainful employment. We were told to go home and put our affairs in order that institutionalization was our only option. No mother should hear that about their 4 year old child. No one gave us hope or tools... which is why I am a parent advocate.... if we do not have hope it is going to be a long hard road. I hope todays class will inspire each of you and help you make an informed decision on whether or not this is an option to try with your kids. (BTW, We fired that psychologist!!)
