A little bit of random KungFu! History ;) The night all started out with this song: Chesney Hawkes One and Only. youtube/watch?v=0V5PLkFuxrY Then Manager Joff Hall and current KungFu Event Manager Armadillios Phoenix sat down one day to discuss starting a new night at the Duchess, an unexplored potential on a Thursday night, for something new and exciting, where Joff then brought this song up. This track was the inspiration for a focus of the night - Pop, chart and guilty pleasures! To differentiate the night from the weekly successful and massive Saturday nights, this new Thursday night focused more on the mainstream chart and rock as well and less on the guilty pleasures. The name, while we couldnt think of anything at the time, We decided we should use a phrase that people would recognize to start off with from a film. The film we chose was The Matrix. Right after Neo downloads the Kung Fu program into his brain, he famously says the phrase I know Kung Fu. And that what we called the night initially! This was of course subject to change. Running, promoting and DJ-ing the night singlhandedly would have been abit difficult so Armadillios hired one of his friends as a secondary DJ to help with the night. With Joff departing the Duchess, Armadillios became the primary event manager for the night. Partnership with his secondary DJ soon ended, and Armadillios asked DJ Oreo who was a resident of many previous rock nights of York for many years to join the team. His understanding of pop and rock and Dubstep was ideal! The night was then rebranded and the name shortened to just KungFu! With slight changes here and there every now and then, with the whole theme of the club night to be all about variety and evolution, the rest, as they say, is history!
