A little ice on the windshield and door handles. Cold outside; 24 at the house and 21 at the dock. It was a beautiful morning with clear skies, un~obscured sun and the crispness in the air of a full Winters day. The lake was smooth as glass and the reflections were most rewarding. The sounds of honking geese, chattering kingfishers, and the occasional scream of an osprey were reminders that I was not alone. The lakes edge was lined with week old ice lines and a newer soft edge of an overnight bite The fish have either migrated to the safe havens of Gordons or Van Camps; or they have not acquired the taste of a fresh meal.... bait worms from Rays. No luck catching, but the fishing was as expected.... better than any day at work. Only out for an hour, I decided to stop by the Volcano Center at Seaquest State Park and did the mile long wetlands trail. As I hobbled along I could hear the little snow birds and wrens hopping about in the barren twigs of alders, in the salal bushes, and dried cattail stalks. A couple of times I heard what I thought was a duck or cormorant swimming around in a still liquid part of the marsh. It, to my amazement, was an otter out walking on very thin ice. I would have missed it if I would have been two minutes either side of his excursion. Parting the outdoors to head back home I take one final look at Mt St Helens, in all her majestic glory, wearing her white wintry robe. To think I could have stayed in my warm bed and let all this go unnoticed ....... BAH~HUMBUG! Arrived home to my lovely caring wife and the warm fire in the fireplace made especially for my comfort. What a way to start 2015....
