A little late but fun, nonetheless! While you enjoy - TopicsExpress

A little late but fun, nonetheless! While you enjoy Thanksgiving this Thursday, consider your guest of honor’s family to the south. Unlike the North American turkey, which inhabits a wide range of the United States, Canada and Mexico, the much rarer ocellated turkey is found only in an area of 50,000 square miles comprised of the Yucatán Peninsula, northern Guatemala and Belize. With a permit, hunting these turkeys is allowed in both Mexico and Guatemala. Ocellated turkeys are especially abundant in Tikal National Park in Guatemala where all wild animals enjoy protected status. Ocellated turkeys are smaller than the typical Thanksgiving bird, weighing in at approximately ten pounds for males and six pounds for females, and are also much more brightly colored. They tend to live in small groups in tropical deciduous and lowland evergreen forests. The single greatest threat to ocellated turkeys is deforestation and habitat destruction.
