A little light reading for the evening. If you find this interesting please share! When you hear the terms Wind Chill Warning or Wind Chill Advisory, what do they mean? Depending on which part of the country you live in, what NWS office covers your county, plays a big part in the criteria used to determine what they issue. Here in the WAND viewing area our counties are serviced by 4 different NWS offices. NWS Chicago covers Ford and Iroquois, NWS Indianapolis covers Warren IN, NWS St. Louis covers Macoupin, Montgomery and Fayette, and the rest are covered by NWS Lincoln. The local weather office for those counties will issue the warnings or advisories. Tonight is a good example of the different criteria used between the Chicago office and the other 3 NWS offices for a Wind Chill Warning/Advisory. A Wind Chill Warning is in effect for McLean, Champaign and Vermilion counties, while just across the county lines to the north or east an advisory is in effect. The criteria for a Wind Chill Warning for the Chicago office is -30 below or colder, while the other offices the criteria is a little warmer at -25 below or colder. The criteria for a Wind Chill Advisory is also different. Chicago office will issue an advisory if the wind chill drops to -20 below or colder, where the other offices would issue an advisory for -15 below or colder. The Paducah office covering southern Illinois has a different criteria, as an advisory would be issued if wind chill reaches -10 below. The regional maps also show the different criteria ranges in the Midwest. Warnings are not issued across the Dakotas, N. Minnesota or N. Wisconsin until the wind chill reaches -40 below or colder. The next zone south from S. Dakota, SC. Minnesota to C. Wisconsin warning issued when wind chill could reach -35 below or colder. You can see the next step which includes Chicago and northern Illinois and then our area included in the -25 below range. The advisory maps also shows the differences. The advisory criteria for N. Dakota, Minnesota, and S. Dakota is -25 below, which would be a warning for much of central Illinois. Hope you find this interesting as we see wind chill warnings and advisories across many areas east of the Mississippi River tonight. Wind Chill advisories extended all the way into central Florida tonight. A freeze warning is in effect for almost the entire deep south. Stay warm this cold is not going to last forever!
