A little metal-facebookgame for the weekend! Like this and I give you a band too to comment. Bernd Schönegge gave me Darkwater :D Do I like them? YES. One of the best bands I have discovered the last years, stumbled upon them in 2011 or something. Their debut album Calling the Earth to Witness was my favourite for a long time (probably because its the most progressive), but their second album Where Stories End have really grown on me as well, despite having shorter, more compact songs. So, what is it that I love about this Swedish band? First and foremost I should mention that theyre very good songwriters, and with that I mean just not the fact they write great songs; they also are excellent when it comes to playing for the SONG - you wont find any needless noodling with this band. And I like the interplay between the instruments; lots of tasteful arrangements and harmonies, and not just doubling each other all the time. Special praise for keyboardist Magnus Holmberg on this; his synth work are absolutely essential to Darkwaters sound. Yeah, and there are other things as well.. they have crunchy powerful guitar riffs, soaring, symphonic synths as well as beautiful piano lines ( and most importantly, they manage to actually incorporate these melodies into the structure of the song...so many bands just have piano stuff in ballads, some chords and all that zzzhit... use it as a proper instrument, you fools!), and lots of good MELODIES, having both catchy hooks as well as emotional phrases. Man, this band is so underrated... Ever see them live? No, unfortunelately not. Hopefully theyll tour a little after releasing their next album (scheduled for a release date in 2014)... would love to see them being booked for ProgPower Europe again :) Favorite song?
