A little story on the origin of the name of the village Hells - TopicsExpress

A little story on the origin of the name of the village Hells Gate, also known by the more friendly name Zions Hill. While the common tale is that Hells Gate can thank its remoteness for its name (it was a hell to get there all the way from The Ladder), this report by M.D. Teenstra from his visit in 1829, suggests a different origin. From here we arrived in the quarter of “Hel-gate”, a barren and steep corner, on which 107 people lived, who went to great lengths to pleasure us and help us in our research. One showed us strange fish and crops from the sea, another flowers and plants, and another ore and other minerals, while people also told us about the origin of the name “Helgate”, which is that a cliff can be found here, in which you can see various holes, together looking like the print of a very large hand. And since no human creature has such a hand, it has to be the hand of the Hell-king.
