A local security company partnered with the Woodside Security Association (WSA) and held a Domestic Worker Safety Workshop at Cowies Hill Sports Club on Thursday August 15th. ADT Security Training Instructor, Conrad Dube, shared practical safety advice and security measures with the domestic workers; including the importance of being vigilant when strangers claim to be on official duty; the role of mobile panic buttons; the advantages of pepper sprays and how to use them; how to describe suspects effectively and suspicious things to look out for while walking to and from work. WSA chairperson, Shane Symons, explained the role and purpose of community security associations and encouraged domestic workers to work together with the neighborhood street monitors by being their eyes and ears in the area. He also described to them a suspect who is believed to have been involved in a number of house break-ins in the area and appealed to the domestic workers to be vigilant and to contact the South African Police Service (SAPS) or their local security company immediately if they see him. ADT Community Development Manager, Keith du Randt, said that domestic worker workshops have proven to be very successful. “It provides a platform for domestic staff to come together and express their safety concerns, ask questions, and learn valuable safety tips.” Ivan Govender, ADT Security Durban South Manager, added that they currently have five community security huts in operation within the Woodside area, and have enjoyed a long-standing relationship with this community. “We are committed to supporting local communities through partnerships with neighbourhood watches and community security associations to effectively reduce criminal activity in these areas. We advise residents to contact their local SAPS or Community Policing Forum if they want to find out about a neighbourhood watch in their area”
