A lot of my friends here are authors, some traditionally published, others self-published. I had an offer from a publisher for my first novel, years ago, but decided not to go that route for various reasons. Id say my two biggest motivations for self-publishing are financial (not forking over the lions share of the books profits to someone else), and my desire for autonomy (no one else dictates things like what cover I can have, controls the book content, etc.). The only serious drawback I see is the time it costs me to manage my own beta reader/editing process, finding cover art, etc., but I continue to feel the balance is more than worth it. Im curious, for those of you who choose to work with a publisher, what do you get out of that deal that we self-published authors are missing out on?
