A lot of pianists born today: Orrin Evans, Donald Brown, Tete Montoliu and Barry Miles. We remember today Thad Jones who was born in Pontiac (Michigan) in a large family of musicians older brother pianist Hank Jones and younger brother Elvin Jones and who Charles Mingus said This is the greatest trumpet player Ive heard in my life. In 1965, with drummer Mel Lewis, he formed the The Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Orchestra. Originally the group begins with informal jam sessions in the studios of New York and the famous Village Vanguard. The group remained in residence at the Vanguard for 12 years. In 1979, they won The GRAMMYs for the album #Live in Munich. Jones also taught at William Paterson University in New Jersey. in 1978 (much to the surprise of his colleagues in New York), Thad Jones abruptly moved to Copenhagen, Denmark, where several other American jazz musicians had settled. He formed a new band Eclipse, composed for the big band of the Danish Radio and taught #jazz at the Royal Conservatory in Copenhagen. A year before his death, Jones returned to the U.S. to lead the Count Basie Orchestra, but stopped because of his health. He then returned to Copenhagen for the final months of his life.
