A loving kindness meditation. The Wheel of Awareness meditation further below can be a useful introduction to this idea of connection between all of us (its the 4th spoke in the meditation) before moving on to sending loving kindness out to everyone. Dr. Dan Siegel talks a little about the reason we send loving kindness out in the Wheel of Awareness Meditation - not least the real benefits it brings ourselves. This meditation here isnt the exact loving kindness meditation I use in class (as I tend to just say it as I remember it, based on traditional retellings) but its a close approximation. I know it can be hard to think of sending loving kindness to people were experiencing difficulty with; all I can suggest is to give it a go and see how that works for you, before you pre-judge it. For me, it helps to think that if this person was regularly afforded this kind of love and compassion, as we ourselves are when we practice, perhaps it would soften their heart and create compassion inside them. Regardless, it softens mine, and I no longer carry them around all day, to pop up every now and then & weigh down my head and heart. I can let them go and stop them taking up space in my life, and focus on the people that I want to focus on, without feeling the anger or frustration thats frankly serving no-one and getting me nowhere.
