A male and a female child are both blessings from Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala. There are so many child-less couples in the world who would give anything to have a child, whether a male or a female. However, society’s perception is distorted and a lot of ignorance prevails in Southeast Asian countries like Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan even today. When a woman delivers a baby girl, instead of congratulating her and giving her support after her painful ordeal, some husbands and mother-in-laws taunt and pass sarcastic remarks on her. Such people do not realize the grave sin and enormity of what they’re saying, and need to do some serious checking of their imaan. There are six things that are necessary for the imaan (faith/ belief) of a Muslim, as stated in this hadith. “Faith is to believe in Allah, His Angels, His Books, His Messengers and the Last Day and to believe in Al-Qadar, the good and the bad of it.” [Reported by Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah] To have faith or imaan in these six things is fundamental to being a Muslim. The first mistake of such people is not accepting this as Allah’s will, so there is something wrong with their imaan. In fact, not only are they rejecting Allah’s decree but they are being ungrateful for the blessing of a child. Being ungrateful towards Allah should not be regarded as a small thing. Surah Ibrahim (14), Ayah 7 of the Quran translates as, “If you are grateful, I would certainly give you more, and if you are ungrateful, My chastisement is truly severe.” [Quran] Secondly, a male child is not better than a female child. Both are precious gifts from Allah and both are required for the society to flourish and prosper. A child who grows up to be a pious individual, whether male or female, is a source of Sadaqah-Jaariyah (on-going charity and a source of good deeds) to the parents even after they pass away. Thirdly, those who think that it is their son who will provide for them when they grow up, such people are making a grave mistake. It is Allah who is Ar-Razzaq, The Sustainer and Provider, and no one but Allah provides. Of course Allah has made a cause for everything, but those people who do not have sons, are they not getting their sustenance? Of course they are, Alhamdulillah. I have heard numerous stories of people who taunt others on the birth of a daughter; it is often their sons who grow up to become good-for-nothing individuals. They become individuals who contribute to the shame of the family and degradation of the society. So whenever anyone taunts or criticizes others on the birth of a daughter, do not feel bad, instead feel sorry for such people and pray for them and ask Allah to guide them and open their eyes before it is too late. @By Bright Muslimah
