A married primary school teacher from Migori recently had an unhappy ending when her secret Facebook lover — masquerading as ‘Mozilla Firefox’ — conned her during their maiden meeting in Nakuru Town. After being regaled her with honey-coated nothings on the social network, she agreed to an invitation to meet him in Nakuru. The amorous teacher, eager to meet ‘Firefox’, her mpango wa kando (secret lover), lied to her husband that she had been invited to Nakuru for a two-day seminar by a women’s group she subscribes to. Giggles At around 10 am, she boarded a shuttle, and after five hours she got to Nakuru, where ‘Firefox’ warmly received her. After exchanging a few pleasantries, he took her to a hotel where he treated her to delicacies as they got to know one another better over warm banter and giggles. To avoid blowing his cover, he tricked her into booking the hotel room using her ID card because if he were to do so, there was a probability of the receptionist knowing him since he was “from around”. The night went on well, but come morning, things went haywire. ‘Firefox’ woke up and took a shower, then when it was the teacher’s turn, he ransacked her handbag and took Sh10,000 and her mobile phone, and fled. Wailing When the teacher came out of the bathroom, she found her ‘lover’ missing. The panicked woman hurriedly got dressed and made a beeline for the reception to enquire if they had seen her companion. The receptionist told her that she had seen him a few minutes earlier and that he only mentioned, in passing, that he was stepping out to sun himself. The teacher began to wail at the reception, claiming to have been conned. When the management attempted to intervene, they learned that she did not know the man she had been with. The fact that he was a mere Facebook friend really shocked the hotel workers. The mere mention of his name — Mozilla Firefox — had them in stitches. To make matters worse, she had no incriminating evidence against ‘Firefox’, save for his phone number, which was in the phone he had stolen, anyway. Fearing the story would spread, the teacher ignored advice to report the incident to the police and called her three friends from Migori, lying to them that she had been the victim of a pickpocket in the matatu she was travelling in. Out of sympathy, her friends sent her Sh1,500, which she used as bus fare back home
