A member has a question about basal cell skin cancer. Blessings, Tracie Question for my fellow Lupies: I went on dosage of 30mg Prednisone about three or so weeks ago, have usually only taken 15 and never for too long because of side effects. I started having basal skin cancers, malignant, in my early thirties, am age 57 now. I have had many, many of these!! My dermatologist, when I started taking meds for Lupus wrote my Rheumatologist that she felt the Prednisone was a contributor to my numerous basal cancers. I have been dealing with so much inflammation recently, I was actually able to get up & move around with this higher dose of Prednisone but new Basal Cells have started showing over night!!! Went to appointment last week, she did 3 biopsies (about 30 new ones). I received the results today, 2 came back malignant Basal but one is Squamous, which is a first for me. So the Prednisone is out, can not continue, pretty much proven that is it suppressing the Immune System to the point that my body has no defense to fight these cancers. Are they immune suppressants doing that much harm to us or is my situation to the extreme?? My dermatologist is also telling me that there could be with me, an actual autoimmune condition that causes a person to have multiple Basal Cell skin cancers that starts at a early age and continues!! Has any one else heard if this?? Are our meds causing us not to be able to fight such conditions as cancer?? This is a no win situation, so I just go back to hardly being able to function?? Any one else facing this?? Thanks!!!
