A memorial service for the late Ambassador Xavier Marchal, EU Head of Delegation A memorial service was held at the Embassy of the Apostolic Nuncio to Ethiopia on Monday (July 1st) for Ambassador Xavier Marchal, Head of Delegation of the European Union to Ethiopia who died unexpectedly in Brussels on May 25th after short illness. Ambassador Marchal was appointed to Ethiopia in 2010 have served previously as Head of Delegation for the European Union in Zimbabwe and Sudan. Eulogies were given by the Apostolic Nuncio to Ethiopia, Archbishop Panikulam, and other religious leaders as well as by the State Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Berhane Gebre-Christos, by the EU’s Charge d’Affaires, Mrs Barbara Plinkert and by M. Froment, Conservation Director of the African Parks Network, in which Ambassador Marchal took a great interest. Ambassador Berhane noted that Ambassador Marchal had travelled widely in Ethiopia and was at home anywhere in the country, looking at the implementation of EU supported development projects and always returning with numerous photographs. He had always demonstrated a real commitment to EU-Ethiopian relations and would be much missed not least by all those with whom he dealt in government, in the private sector and in all segments of society who had respected and admired his commitment, his drive and his achievements.
