A message from Australias Foreign Minister Julie Bishop: This Diwali I extended to the Hindu, Jain and Sikh communities in Australia, and throughout the world, best wishes with their Diwali celebrations. Called the Festival of Lights, this beautiful festival symbolises victory of good over evil, light over darkness, and knowledge over ignorance. This year it was celebrated in cities, towns and suburbs across the breadth of Australia reflecting the growth in our migrant communities and their important contribution to the diversity in Australia’s spiritual and cultural life. The Festival is also a time for us to acknowledge the central role diaspora communities, like those from India, are playing in building the economic prosperity of our nation. In the business, professional and educational fields links are being forged at a people-to-people level that advance our trading relationship with India and the broader region. Diwali stands for renewed commitment to friendship, religious tolerance, spreading the word of peace and harmony – these are amongst the highest values we all share.
