A message from Lt. Gen. David D. Halverson, commanding general of the U.S. Army Installation Management Command and the U.S. Armys Assistant Chief of Staff for Installation Management. *********** IMCOM Team, We will observe Memorial Day on May 26. Members of the Installation Management team are encouraged to honor those who gave their all in service to our nation and to remember the sacrifices of their families. We honor the more than 1 million men and women who lost their lives defending America in wars from the Revolution to todays global conflicts. We must remember forever the men and women who know all too much the cost of our freedom, for their service to this country is the greatest gift of all. The first large observance of Memorial Day was held in 1868 at Arlington National Cemetery. For 150 years, Arlington National Cemetery has been the nations most hallowed ground. It is the final resting place for more than 400,000 active duty service members, veterans and their families. The cemetery bears witness to the American heritage and the service and sacrifice of men and women in uniform throughout the nations history. Among those who will pay tribute to Americas valiant heroes this Memorial Day will be survivors and Gold Star Family members. We must continue to support the spouses, children, fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters of service members who lost their lives while defending our nation. We must always remember the sacrifices of our Gold Star Family members. A national moment of remembrance takes place 1500 hours Memorial Day. Please stop and reflect on the meaning of Memorial Day and the Soldiers who paid a price we will never be able to match. Thank you for your service, for your continued dedication to this great nation and to the memory of those who have fought so bravely for it. Please have a safe Memorial Day weekend with your Family and friends. Memorial Day marks the start of the summer recreation and travel season. Be alert to the risks associated with summer activities and travel. Army Strong! Lt. Gen. Halverson army.mil/article/126648/
