A message from the leader of the Top o Hill project, Frank Leadley: I am very angry at present! After all the work and money that our community has put in to develop a really special attraction at the Top Of The Hill Rest Area, I was extremely annoyed to find on Thursday morning that 10 plants have been stolen from the garden bordering the parking area. To make it worse, we haven’t even paid for the plants yet! We are working to get some signage organised, and eventually CCTV cameras and lighting will help when we can get the money to pay for them. But in the meantime can I ask that the whole community act as our “eyes and ears” – check on people / cars that look suspicious, take down number plates and report to the police, remind the overnighters that it is a no-camping area, just make a point of driving past the area whenever it is convenient, etc. It is an Opua Community project and facility, and all of us in Opua should have a sense of ownership, and feel violated when this sort of thing happens
