A message received at 6pm last night explained that our featured singer was unable to perform for us because of throat problems. (Hope your voice recovers soon, Sally.) Last time this happened, we were lucky enough to get an outstanding substitute at the last minute. This time, we didnt worry too much about the short notice because we knew we could rely on our open mic musicians to give us a quality finish to the evening. Were sorry we couldnt fill the gap with a feature, but would like to thank Peter Williams and Humdrum Express for living up to expectations. Of course we still had our spoken word feature! Former Birmingham Poetry Laureate Jan Watts kindly extended her set which centred on a couple of extracts from her new novel, Benches. This came over as an excellent read and its available on Amazon so do please get yourself a copy. Or better still, pop over to Poetry for Lunch any Thursday outside the Library of Birmingham where Jan will sell you one in person. Thanks for your entertaining set, Jan. As usual, we had a lively mix of spoken word with a dash of music from our open mic performers, including a short extract from a play by Lost Rag Productions called Banjaxed. Theyre looking for a couple of actors to complete the cast for their dark political comedy set in the Black Country. If the extract is anything to go by, its a strong and funny piece. Thanks to Tim Scarborough for running the raffle which is a new feature designed to raise money so that we can start to pay a little towards travel expenses for featured artists. (So far featured performers have given their services to Mouth and Music without charge.) On 12th August, we welcome Boxer Poet, Matt Windle and Scandinavian influenced folk duo Sirkel in our Festival special. Hope to see you then!
