A micro-organism called Brucella ceti has been isolated from the brain of the bottlenose dolphin, which live stranded and died at Hayling Island, Hampshire on 29th October and was subsequently retrieved and examined by a CSIP team from ZSL last month (national reference SW2014/408, see post of 30th October). Meningo-encephalitis due to infection with Brucella has been found in several other stranded bottlenose dolphins in the UK and is likely to be the cause of death of this individual. (2011) Infection with Brucella ceti and high levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) stranded in southwest England. Veterinary Record doi: 10.1136/vr.d2714. Follow up histopathological examination will be conducted to help confirm the cause of death. Many thanks again to everyone at BDMLR end who assisted us with this stranding. Images credit BDMLR and CSIP-ZSL
