A middle aged couple walked up to my truck this afternoon and immediately, I got a bad vibe from the guy. Tense, eyes darting back to his wife, then away, then back... Like they maybe just had a tiff. She orders a 20 ounce mocha. I ask him; What can I get for you buddy? I dont know. Something strong. A latte? Or an Americano? I can make it is strong as you like. I dont know anything about espresso, I just want a strong black coffee thatll wake me up. He looks back at his wife again with a not-too-friendly look. Somethings going on here. So I made him a four shot Americano. She paid for both thanked me, and off they went, him with a dark cloud in tow. Five minutes later, the guy comes back; Hey, I dont like this. Hes shaking his head back and forth, face almost curled up in a snarl. In 20 years, Ive *never* had anybody come back and complain about my coffee (except maybe the temperature). Oh, Im sorry. What woud you like? Cream maybe, or sugar? No. I just dont want it. Its too sweet. {Too sweet? A plain quadruple Americano? Whatever}. I was taken off guard by how assertive he was and I was embarrassed by such a vocally unhappy customer in front of so many people. So I just offered him his money back and put his half-gone coffee in one of my sinks. A few minutes later, my curiosity got the best of me, so I popped the lid off his cup and stuck a straw in it. He was drinking his wifes mocha! Which meant of course, she had been drinking his quad Americano. Interesting that she wasnt the one who came back with a complaint. She probably needed the extra buzz just to deal with his attitude anyway.
