A miracle is many at a times motivated by human need at hand, a sign is God-ward and it is Gods prerogative and it is meant particularly to convince sinners of the legitimacy of the gospel and God, in other words signs reveal God, ie the signs in Exodus were meant to convince Pharaoh and the whole world about the existence of God. Miracles in the book of John are referred to as signs because they revealed the attributes, divinity and personality of Christ to prove He is the Son of God to the unbelieving world and human needs was secondary, in other words they were revelatory signs but simultaneously meeting human need. Once I believe that Jesus is the Christ Son of God I know longer need a sign because a sign have validated the gospel in my spirit. When you read scriptures closely you realize that that these were ministry tools given to the ministers of the gospel as they went to the world preaching the gospel to un-regenerated people. When it comes to signs and wonders, God destroyed Egypt to show the world His supremacy and sovereignty over the whole world and prove beyond any doubt the futility of Egyptians gods. That is the reason why the gift of tongues is a sign to unbelievers not believers, where as prophetic teaching and preaching is for believers. 1Cor 14:22, says, Therefore tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers, but prophesying is not for unbelievers but for those who believe. Signs and wonders validated the authenticity of the gospel not the legitimacy of the preacher. Scriptures say in Mark 16:20, And they went out and preached every where, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through the accompanying signs. This is why Jesus will deny preachers who performed miracles in His Name and say I never knew you, because you dont need to be genuine to perform a genuine miracle in the name of Jesus Christ. When you speak God s word, God confirms his word, not you, so miracles, signs and wonders are not direct accolodes of the preachers holiness, purity, faithfulness, prayerful lifestyle. The fruit of the Spirit is rather the stamp, guarantee, authentication of the genuineness of the believer in Christ, therefore dont look for a sign but look for the fruit. Lastly believers are seeing less of signs and wonders wonders because they spend much time ministering to the to other believers in church. Go where there is a need and you will see Christ revealing himself in ways you never thought of.
