A motorist who knocked down a four-year-old boy on a zebra - TopicsExpress

A motorist who knocked down a four-year-old boy on a zebra crossing and dragged him underneath her car for 120ft has been allowed to keep her licence. Rachel Batts, 28, told magistrates she lives in a village and needs the vehicle to get to work, take her son to school and help her grandfather. Ms Batts hit Luke Spratt as he crossed the road with his mother. She failed to realise she had hit the toddler until she had travelled a further 120ft! Luke’s injuries included a deep wound to the head requiring a nine-day hospital stay, three operations and skin grafts. Batts admitted careless driving but escaped a ban with just six penalty points and a £250 fine. Philip Goose, spokesman for road safety charity Brake, believes Batts should have been banned from the road. Do you think Mike Allem, chairman of the bench, has been unduly lenient in handing out penalty points and a fine instead of a ban?
