A movement that sprang from late 20th-century Roman Catholicism - TopicsExpress

A movement that sprang from late 20th-century Roman Catholicism and has found a particularly welcoming environment in Latin America, liberation theology holds that the church must stand on the side of the impoverished and the downtrodden, and that it must, if necessary, support the overthrow of social systems that contribute to their oppression. Its more extreme advocates believe that capitalism is chief among the oppressive systems in causing social and material inequities around the world. I couldnt have said it any better myself! (y) :-D However, since this brief article was authored by a right-winger for a right-wing website, they end up drawing ridiculously erroneous conclusions, some of which would be downright comical if it werent for the fact that these people have way too much influence in our society: Ultimately, liberation theology was crippled by a convergence of several factors, among them, the free market economics boom that swept through Latin America soon after those defeats. This boom demonstrated that economic growth was a far more efficient way of fighting poverty than armed struggle. Oh yeah, cause that economic boom really trickled down to the impoverished starving people, lol. I have yet to read a single argument against Liberation Theology and Catholic Socialism that can hold water. Ive never read a single one, ever. Newsflash, right-wing fascist propagandists: What actually crippled liberation theology in Latin America was the CIA assassinating democratically-elected leaders like Salvador Allende and replacing him and others with fascist dictators who then tortured and murdered millions of their own people. Then in the 1980s and 90s, as the United States was waging an intelligence war against Latin America to allow further plundering of its resources by American corporations, Pope John Paul II was busy replacing prelates who were favorably disposed toward liberation theology with decidedly more conservative (fascist) prelates. THAT is what served to cut the legs out from under the Liberation Theology movement. And yet, even after all that, it is making a comeback, because you cant suppress the truth forever. discoverthenetworks.org/viewSubCategory.asp?id=299
