A neighbor or two voiced concerns to the Historic District about our new custom window (because it only has 6 panes, while the other windows have 8). While we did temporarily remove it and put the plywood back up, we have received the ok from the HDC to reinstall the window. We dont want to make a fuss about it - in fact, we feel lucky to have neighbors who care so much about the neighborhood - but we definitely do want to explain how this came to happen. Three photos here: (1) Old broken window that we found on the third floor, in front of the broken window... that fits perfectly into the boarded up window frame (2) Boarded up window frame (current status). (3) Custom window in the window frame. The new custom window is an exact replica of the old broken window. Admittedly, its more than a little odd that this one has fewer panes than all of the others. If we had noticed earlier, we probably would have had an 8-pane window made. That being said, while this broken window may have been a replacement at some point, there are indications that it sat in place for many years. Had it been a very recent replacement, we would be more inclined to have a different custom window made. Instead, since we cant say for sure when the mistake occurred (1907 during construction? 1920s after a window broke? who knows!) we are going to leave it in place as another element of character and an entertaining talking point. Character, its the reason we love these old homes :)
