A new NEON paper in PLoSONE! This paper explains how our scientists did the digging and the math to find the most efficient sampling methods to capture variability in soil properties at 60 sites across the U.S. in a statistically meaningful manner. They also used the data to test a couple of hypotheses. Would you think that agricultural soils are more or less uniform across space than uncultivated soils, or that the height and density of the local vegetation would affect conditions in the soil? Read the paper to find out what the data show.
