A new internal unit to investigate Fraud and Corruption within the South African Police Service Media Statement from the office of the National Commissioner South African Police Service 11 July 2013 Bloemfontein - An anti-corruption unit aimed at fighting fraud and corruption within the South African Police Service (SAPS) will be launched in order to uproot this criminal conduct and increase professionalism within the Service. This was announced today (11 July 2013) by the SAPS National Commissioner, General Riah Phiyega, at the launch of the Free State Province Crime Prevent Strategy “If we are to successfully fight crime in the country, we must first get our house in order. We must fight crime with clean hands. We will therefore not shy away from taking action against our own. We will certainly do it with boldness,” said General Phiyega. The unit will start operating during the current financial year. Over the past twelve-month period to 31 March 2013, disciplinary action, which led to the dismissal of 415 officials country wide, was taken. This was for various acts of criminality, including corruption and fraud. Over the past three months to June, 110 members have been dismissed for similar offences. The SAPS is an active participant in various Government initiatives to fight corruption and fraud within government. These include the Ant-corruption Task Team (ACTT) that operates both within the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS) Cluster and the country at large. "Therefore, this new unit will provide a significant contribution to accelerate these collective initiatives. It will ultimately contribute to the realisation of the National Development Plan (NDP) objectives of establishing a functioning anti-corruption system that is adequately resourced and enjoys operational independence to ensure thoroughness and objectivity," General Phiyega explained. -End- Media Enquiries: Lieutenant General Solomon Makgale saps.gov.za/_dynamicModules/internetSite/newsBuild.asp?myURL=3446
