A new report says that Niagara Falls and Buffalo are more dangerous than New York City Buffalo, Niagara Falls have higher crime rates than NYC BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) - There may be more people in New York City, but you’re more likely to be a victim of violent crime in Buffalo or Niagara Falls. According to 2013 crime statistics from the FBI, New York City has a violent crime rate of .62 out of every 100 people. This is lower than the rates in Buffalo and Niagara Falls, which has 1.25 and 1.17 violent crime out of every 100 people, respectively. Violent crime is described as murder, rape, robbery or aggravated assault. But even when it comes to property crime, residents in Buffalo and Niagara Falls fare worse than our downstate neighbor. New York City has a property crime rate of 1.69 out of every 100 people, while Buffalo has a rate of 4.83 out of every 100 people and Niagara Falls has a rate of 5.66 out of every 100 people. Property crime is defined as burglary, theft, motor vehicle theft and arson.
