A new study from the TBI shows one in four hate crimes reported in Tennessee last year, and almost half of the states assault hate crime cases, happened in Shelby County. Shelby County Public Affairs Officer Chip Washington said hate crimes are hard to patrol and stop, because it’s hard to read people’s minds. The TBI said the numbers are unusually high for Shelby County. A spokesperson said he didn’t know if it is due to an explosion of crimes or an issue with how the sheriff’s office reports the numbers, and said it could be even a software glitch.
