A new study has evidence which links fear to ancestral trauma. Scientists taught mice, whose neural pathways closely resemble our own, to fear the smell of cherry blossoms. Consequently, once their offspring was born they also feared the smell, having never previously been exposed to it. The science is tricky but it has something to do with the way RNA is encoded and passed. Two things about that study though-- 1) fearing the smell of cherry blossoms would be an awful thing and I thank the mice for the sacrifice they made. 2) All of a sudden things like slavery, the holocaust, war, and general acts of personal or societal violence start to have even further reaching implications than we could have ever imagined. The pain of these stories, and so many more, is perhaps, quite literally, written in our blood. Trippy shit, huh? The point is, we cant control the accidental tragedies but we can control how we choose to treat each other. If the bad is passed along, maybe goodness can be too, so be understanding, because You never know what hurt someone carries. In fact, they might not know it either. And be kind. Because youd hate to be the reason an innocent kid wakes up to the world afraid. Food for thought.
