A new study in the Journal of Neuroscience has revealed that brain inflammation interferes with the networks involved in retrieving complex memories. Scientists at the University of California, Irvine, have shown that immune signaling chemicals known as cytokines negatively affect neurons in the hippocampus and make it hard for them to communicate with each other. This, then, leads to memory impairment. The researchers say that these results provide a new explanation of why individuals on chemotherapy or suffering from autoimmune diseases frequently report memory problems.
