A new theory on global warming Energy cannot be created or destroyed. Energy can only transform from one phase state to another. Energy seeks equilibrium. Thus energy flows from phases of higher states to that to lower states. Oil is liquid energy stored deep within the earth. One barrel of oil produces 5.6 million Btu’s per barrel. physics.uci.edu/~silverma/units.html A Btu energy unit represents the amount of energy required to heat 1 lb mass of water from 60F° to 61F°. I Btu = 1.055 kJ = 5908000 kilo Joules per barrel of oil. 1 watt = 1 Joule per second, 1 kW = 1000 watts. 5908 kilo Watts of power per barrel of oil Let’s just go back to a barrel of oil is 5.6 million Btu’s, meaning that one barrel of oil can heat 5.6 million pounds 1F°, or 2.8 million pounds of water 2F°, 560 000 pounds of water 10F°, or 14 tons of 200F°. Water boils at 212F°, so one barrel of oil contains more than enough energy to boil 14 tons of water. Once the oil is extracted, it is then combusted in many ways releasing this energy into the atmosphere. Energy flows from hot to cold. This added heat to the atmosphere will seek out colder substances to transfer its energy to: Cold air masses, Ice, Cold water, and any other material that is of a lower value then it. Thus the ‘heat’ energy that we are pumping into the atmosphere is heating up the particles and molecules. This heat energy will be converted into movement energy causing the atmosphere to move faster. This in turn causes friction between the atmosphere and surface of the earth, thus causing the air to become further heated. Thermal pollution into the atmosphere, in my opinion is a far greater contributor to global warming then the trapping of heat by greenhouse gasses. However these greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere will only cause the effect of thermal pollution to intensify. We consume 87.4 million barrels of oil per day. worldwatch.org/oil-consumption-hits-all-time-high 1.224 billion tons of water can be heated 200F° with this amount of oil. Do I even want to know the volume of water this is? 9.462 billion barrels of US oil equivalent water, 39.213 billion cubic feet of water 200F° per day. 1.110 trillion liters of water 200F° per day. 1.110 billion cubic metres of water 1110 cubic kilometers of water 200F° per day. Lake Superior contains 12,100 cubic km of water. So in less than 12 days oil consumption alone, produces enough energy to essentially boil Lake Superior. These figures do not take into account for coal, natural gas, or nuclear fission. @ Logan Anderson October 8th 2012 God help us when the ice runs out.
