A newspaper cutting regarding the awarding of the Star for serving in Africa. For those that dont know the members of the battalion missed out on being awarded this by one day. To qualify they needed to have landed in Egypt on or before the 31st December 1915. They did not land until the 1st of January. They were a day late, and the reason they were a day late is that on the voyage from England, when sailing through the Mediterranean, they spent a day avoiding the attention of a submarine which had already claimed HMS Suffolk close by. This was quite an emotive subject for the survivors of the battalion for quite some time. The letter to the paper would appear to be written by a relation of Frank Appleby 12/851 (KIA 01/07/1916 - mo known grave - Thiepval memorial)
