A nice little place to visit on 61 is New Madrid. It is mainland USAs epicenter for earthquakes - the largest earthquake ever happened their in1812. On a significant river bend it also played a role in the union troops victories down the Mississippi including the eventual seizing of New Orleans. The little Museum on the waterfront has some really interesting artifacts of both earthquake and civil war history. Occasionally a paddle steamer will call in.
