A note from President Sellars on the loss of Charles Persall... Friends, The loss of a colleague, friend, teacher and mentor is always hard. The Graceland family lost all of these with the passing of Charles Persall, who taught both education and psychology courses. Our hearts go out to Katie and the three Persall children — Kelsie, Charlie and Catelin — and to Katie’s extended Everett family. Charles Persall passed away Monday night surrounded by his family and FaceTiming with his daughter Kelsie and son-in-law Benjy in Louisiana. A colleague recently shared with me a tribute to Charles from a student. When asked who have been his best teachers at Graceland, the student quickly replied, “Well, Charles Persall.” And why? “Because it was so obvious from the very start how much he really cared about his students.” That assessment could have come from many students and faculty alike, and we in turn shared our appreciation for him. I encourage you to join us in remembrance of Charles Persall. Even while we grieve privately, we will come together to reaffirm our sense of community and celebrate the campus family that is Graceland. Please remember the Persalls in your prayers. · Wednesday, 7 p.m., the Shaw Center Amphitheater: Campus Ministries will lead a candlelight vigil in support of Charles’ family. Family, colleagues, students and friends will have an opportunity to share memories. At the end of the service, candles will be distributed and lighted to show our solidarity and support of the Persalls in this time of loss. · Thursday, 7 p.m., Closson Center: Fans are encouraged to wear purple to the women’s volleyball game in support of the Persall family and to promote efforts to find a cure for cancer. There will be a short service before the game to honor and remember Charles Persall. John Sellars, PhD, CPA President
