A note from a parent... When most folks hear we have a 200-day, year-round school calendar, they first recoil in horror. Then they ask, with a blend of skepticism and genuine curiosity, How is that going for you?. On the eve of the first day of our second school year, I think Im finally prepared to answer that with a full opinion. I like it. After a day of end of year celebrations on Friday, our family spent this weekend rather relaxed, free of the typical flurry of getting it all together for Back to School. No stress, no anxiety, just rolling from one week to another and looking forward to many new schoolmates and friendships to come given that tomorrow morning, the student body will be more than double where we started this month last year. We had two separate 2-week breaks this summer, so a month of rest, and we enjoyed every bit of them. As parents, we feel like it was just enough time off. Were grateful to have avoided the summer boredom trap...and its alternative, an endless string of wallet-draining day camps. The girls brains are still fully engaged, there will be no need to ease back into a learning mode. Far from feeling deprived of summer, were all ready to go back tomorrow and are looking forward to planning some fun things to do on our September, October, November, December, February, March/April, May/June, June/July and August breaks in the coming school year. Our school provides about 25 more instruction days than the typical school calendar, mental health breaks ranging from 1 to 2 weeks virtually every month of the year, and no summer scramble to find 2+ months of care for the kids while parents work. So to answer all who have asked: Yup, I like it. I like it a LOT. #theSAESchool
