A note from a very proud and excited Coach Golemon about his State Champion Team! Congratulations to the Bandera Lady Bulldog on winning the 2014 U.I.L. Girls Class 4A State Cross Country Championship. This marks the 1st time that Bandera High School has ever won a state team title in cross country or even won state team cross country medals. As a result of an excellent team effort by the 7 Lady Bulldog runners and their teammates, who were there to assist, support, and encourage, Bandera defeated Decatur, Dalhart, and Liberty Hill, all of which were ranked ahead of the Lady Bulldog in the final 2014 cross country coaches poll. For the 1st time in school history, Bandera had 2 individual state medal winners, as freshman Sandy Clarkin, who ran 12:08.29, finished 7th and senior Karla Presa, who ran 12:17.73, finished 10th. Junior Mercy Yermo with a time of 12:18.57 finished 12th, just 2 places away from earning a state individual medal. Senior Kate Martin ran 12:50.51 to place 44th and sophomore Kaitlyn Rodriguez ran 13:00.63 to place 61st, allowing both to finish in the top 1/2 of the field of 150 runners. The number 6 and 7 Lady Bulldog runners were sophomore Taelen Butler ran 13:30.89 and senior Sarah Butler ran 13:58.18. The team victory was especially exhilarating, since the Lady Bulldogs had finished 7 points behind Liberty Hill at the 2014 U.I.L. Region IV Cross Championships one week earlier. Keep in mind that Liberty Hill had been ranked #1 in the state the entire 2014 cross country season; however, Liberty Hill finished 4th at the 2014 U.I.L. State Cross Country Championships, as they lost on the tie breaker to Dalhart. In defeating 2nd place Decatur, a consistent cross country power, by 10 points, the Lady Bulldogs identified Bandera High School as having an extremely strong girls cross country program. Obviously, the 2014 Lady Bulldog cross country season came to an end on the most positive note possible, so what does Bandera do for an encore in 2015. Unfortunately, 3 of the State Champion Lady Bulldogs (the #2, #4, and # 7 runners) will be graduating in the Spring of 2015. Like the George Jones song asks Whos going to fill their shoes? Fortunately, the Lady Bulldogs will return their #1, #3, #5, and #6 runners. Also, fortunate is the fact that the junior varsity team performed extremely well during the 2014 season, plus there should be at least 2 to 3 incoming freshmen runners in the fall of 2015 who have the ability of filling those shoes. Whoever fills those shoes will need to be committed, focused, hard working, and self-disciplined, as well as confident.
