A number of years after Bela turned down the role of The Frankenstein Monster, Lugosi took it upon himself to create his new brand of a horrid creature. Posessing the malevolent brain of Ygor, the monster is originally blind thrrought the entire feature due to a operational malfunction in the previous film The The Ghost of Frankenstein.... Belas performance is misunderstood as his dialogue and explanations as to why his Monster goes bungling amidst the atmospheric sets is unexplained. I always thought that to be a vexing dirty shame on Universals behalf... Lugosis monster is far more menacing than most of the others, there is a dark evil to his portrayal, even though his dialogue, continuity and storyline are absent from the film. This was intended to be a memorable monster unlike any of its predecessors. And it is always fascinating to watch- Who knows maybe the footage and dialogue will surface one day, and I as a Lugosi fan, will be in complete elation.
