A parent asks our group: Help! So my son had his evaluation for physical, occupational and feeding therapies today and he needs $600-$800 worth of therapies a week. Our insurance will only cover 20 visits for feeding therapy and 20 for OT or PT (but not 20 for both) and after that they dont cover any of it. This would get us through mid-May if he starts next week (todays evaluations counted as one visit for each), of course we have to pay 100% until we meet the $3,000 deductible and then they cover 80% of the remainder of the twenty visits. He is my oldest of two ASD children and I live in Mississippi, where there is not state law mandating (or insurance company willing) to cover any Autism related services. The therapists doing the evaluation suggested trying to get him covered by Medicaid (as a disabled child living at home), but I am not sure he will meet the guidelines for that (he is high functioning with moderate autism) and we make too much to qualify for medicaid through means-based service. We were planning on moving anyway (I am in graduate school and finishing up with everything I need to be in state for in May), but our top priority is finding a state that has better coverage for autism related services. How many of you have insurance (private insurance as if we cant get Medicaid here, probably wouldnt get it in your state either) that covers more than 20 visits and what states do you live in? I have heard that some states cover OT for ASD students in the school system (he was seen briefly in kindergarten but released after his handwriting became legible, and the school here says unless it impedes his classroom learning experience they will not provide it). If any of you could share states that we should look into, I would really appreciate it. We have professional degrees that are pretty much in demand in all 50 states, just not sure where to look. Thanks!
