A parent asks our group: Needing thoughts from other parents: My daughter takes medication (methylphenidate) for her ADHD, along with many diet changes. For her SPD, she has done OT, equine therapy and ballet. She has always had sleeping issues (or really a lack thereof). She used take melatonin, but we were concerned with possible side effects and the decrease of her producing her own. She began to take Trazodone, which is not only a sleep aid, but an antidepressant . We heard bad things about that to, so we went back to melatonin. She isnt getting enough sleep and now she is so hateful and moody....like a hormonal teenager, but she is EIGHT!!! I remember being just like her and saying and doing such mean things to my mom when I was a kid. I remember telling myself to stop and I literally could not. She says that to me and I know how she feels. When she took Trazodone, I dont remember her being so miserable. She was A) sleeping better and B) not so moody, irritable, frustrated, and sad. She has a doctors appt next week and I am thinking that I should ask him to put her back on Trazodone. Thoughts? Are there other meds that have helped? What about adding Intuniv (some of her ADHD symptoms are still present and I heard adding that could help). It should I take her off the stimulant (I had to because it made me super irritable and anxious)?? Thank you for any thoughts ; )
